Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Japan
Your passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your stay — Japan does not enforce the 6-month rule. Airlines sometimes still ask for 6 months of validity, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Immigration may ask for proof of departure
Officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai sometimes ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — enforcement varies by officer and airport.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host confirmation
Immigration rarely asks, but having a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host shows you have a place to stay. Keep a copy on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Officers almost never check, but carrying a bank statement or enough cash/credit for your stay covers you if asked. No set minimum amount is published.Recommended

Visit Japan Web saves time
Register at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp before you fly. You'll get QR codes for immigration and customs — skip the paper forms and the long queues. It's free and takes 5 minutes.
Overstaying is serious
The 90-day visa-free period is not extendable. Overstaying even by a day can get you fined, detained, or banned from Japan for years. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket. Reserve first night accommodation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web. Print or screenshot everything.
2
Arrive at Japanese airport
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other international airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'Visitors'. Have your passport and (if you registered) Visit Japan Web QR code ready.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They'll stamp you in — usually takes 1–2 minutes.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
Grab your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, show the customs QR code at the automated gate.
5
Exit and enjoy your stay
You're in. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any domestic flights. Don't overstay the 90 days.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work for a Japanese company or do paid work. Remote work for an overseas employer is a gray area — technically not allowed, but rarely enforced for short stays. If you plan to work remotely, keep it low-key and don't tell immigration.
No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Japan before day 90. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban. If you need longer, you'd need to apply for a proper visa before travel.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6 months are counted from your entry date, not your departure date.
Not officially, but immigration may ask if you look like you might work illegally or overstay. Having a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash is enough. No specific amount is required.
No, it's optional. But it saves time — you fill in your passport, flight, and customs declaration online, then get QR codes to skip paper forms. It's free and takes 5 minutes. Do it before you fly.
Each entry resets your 90-day clock. So you could leave to South Korea for a weekend and come back for another 90 days. But immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. Best to space them out.
It's rare for Romanian passport holders with proper documents. Common reasons: no return ticket, passport too short validity, or suspicion of working illegally. If denied, you'll be held at the airport and put on the next flight back. You can appeal, but it's difficult. Best to have all documents ready.
