Rwandan passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom in 2026. You must apply and receive approval before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eTA option for Rwanda. Plan ahead: standard visitor visa processing takes about 3 weeks, but can be longer during peak periods.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK visa application
Visa required
You need a visa before traveling to the UK. Apply online at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the standard visitor visa costs £115 and allows stays up to 6 months. Processing takes 3 weeks on average, so apply well ahead of your trip.Apply for UK visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in the UK. The UK does not require 6 months of remaining validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may enforce their own rules — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
UK Border Force officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready — they check this at passport control, especially if you arrive without a visa.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Immigration officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel booking or a letter of invitation from your host ready. If staying with friends or family, their address and contact number should be on hand.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
You may be asked to show you can support yourself during your stay. Bank statements or payslips covering the last 3 months work best — no specific minimum amount is published, but have enough to cover accommodation, food, and transport.Recommended
Visa required — apply well in advance
Rwandan passport holders cannot enter the UK without a pre-approved visa. There is no visa-on-arrival or eTA. Apply at least 4–6 weeks before your planned travel date to account for processing times and potential delays.
Biometric appointment in Kigali only
All Rwandan applicants must attend a biometric appointment at the TLScontact centre in Kigali. There are no other locations in Rwanda. Book your appointment as soon as you submit your online application — slots fill up quickly during peak seasons.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your UK visa online
Go to gov.uk/apply-uk-visa and fill out the Standard Visitor visa application. You'll need to create an account, answer questions about your trip, and upload supporting documents (passport scan, bank statements, accommodation proof, travel itinerary). The application fee is £115 for a 6-month visa (as of 2026).
2
Book and attend a biometric appointment
After submitting your online application, you'll be directed to book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). In Rwanda, the only VAC is in Kigali (TLScontact, at the British High Commission). You'll give fingerprints and a photo. Appointments are usually available within a week, but book early during peak seasons (summer, Christmas).
3
Wait for visa processing
Standard processing takes 3 weeks (15 working days) from your biometric appointment. You can pay extra for priority (5 working days, ~£250) or super priority (24 hours, ~£1,000). You'll receive a decision by email, and your passport with the visa vignette will be returned to the VAC for collection or courier.
4
Prepare for arrival in the UK
When you land at a UK airport (Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, etc.), follow signs to 'UK Border' or 'Arrivals'. Join the queue for 'Non-EEA Passports'. Have your passport with the visa vignette, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and funds. Answer clearly and honestly. The process usually takes 5–15 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

No. There is no visa-on-arrival for Rwandan passport holders. You must apply for and receive a visa before you travel. The only exception is if you're transiting airside (not passing through UK border control) for less than 24 hours — but even then, you may need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) depending on your nationality. Check with the airline or UK government website.
Standard processing takes about 3 weeks (15 working days) from your biometric appointment. You can pay for priority service (5 working days, around £250 extra) or super priority (24 hours, around £1,000 extra). Processing times can be longer during peak seasons (summer, Christmas, Easter).
As of 2026, the fee for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa is £115. If you need a longer visa (2, 5, or 10 years), the fees are higher: £400 for 2 years, £771 for 5 years, and £963 for 10 years. These fees are non-refundable even if your application is refused.
The only Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Rwanda is in Kigali, operated by TLScontact. It's located at the British High Commission, Kacyiru. You must book an appointment online after submitting your visa application. Walk-ins are not accepted.
In most cases, no. Standard Visitor visas are not extendable. You must leave the UK before your visa expires. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances, such as a medical emergency or a family crisis. If you need to stay longer, you'd typically need to apply for a different visa category from outside the UK.
Have these ready in your hand luggage: your passport with the valid visa vignette, a printed or digital copy of your return/onward ticket, proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter), and proof of sufficient funds (bank statement or credit card). The officer may ask about your itinerary, so be prepared to explain your plans clearly.
No, travel insurance is not a mandatory requirement for a Standard Visitor visa application or for entry to the UK. However, it is strongly recommended. The UK has a National Health Service (NHS) that provides free emergency treatment, but non-emergency care and hospital stays can be very expensive. Insurance covers these costs and also protects against trip cancellations or lost luggage.
