Rwandan passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel — there's no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Rwandan nationals. Plan ahead, as the application process involves an online form, an appointment at a visa application centre, and a decision that can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK VisaYou need a visa before you fly; there is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Rwandan citizens.
Apply at a UK embassy or consulate
Rwandan passport holders must obtain a visa before travelling to the United Kingdom. You are not eligible for the UK eVisa system, so you must apply through the standard visa application process at a UK embassy or consulate, or via the official UK Visas and Immigration online application portal, and attend an appointment if required.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date well in advance; if it's close, renew it before applying for the visa.
At least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of departure from the UK (or from the date of entry, depending on the visa conditions). Ensure your passport does not expire before this period.Required
Blank passport pagesThe visa and entry stamp need a clean page; a single blank page is the minimum.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the UK visa vignette (sticker) and entry stamp. If you have fewer than one blank page, you will need to renew your passport before applying.Required
Return or onward ticketHave your flight details ready to show you intend to leave the UK after your visit.
Proof of departure from the UK
You must have a confirmed return or onward travel ticket to a destination outside the UK. This is typically checked at check-in and by UK Border Force upon arrival.Required
Proof of fundsBank statements or payslips can serve as evidence; the amount depends on your itinerary.
Sufficient funds for your stay
You must be able to show you have enough money to support yourself during your stay in the UK, including accommodation and living costs. The exact amount is not fixed but should cover your planned activities and duration.Required
Accommodation detailsYou'll need to show where you'll be staying; a simple booking confirmation is enough.
Where you will stay
Provide evidence of your accommodation in the UK, such as a hotel booking, a letter of invitation from a host, or proof of a place to stay. This is often required as part of the visa application.Required
Travel insuranceProtect yourself against unexpected costs; it's not required but wise.
Recommended for medical and trip coverage
While not a mandatory requirement for a UK visa, travel insurance is strongly recommended to cover medical expenses, trip cancellation, and other unforeseen events during your stay.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any arrival form before landing.
Not required
No arrival declaration or online form is required for entry into the UK for Rwandan passport holders. Not required
No eVisa or visa-on-arrival for Rwandan citizens
Even though the UK has an eVisa system for some nationalities, Rwandan passport holders are NOT eligible. You must apply for a physical visa at the embassy/consulate or visa application centre before you travel. Don't fall for third-party websites claiming to offer an eVisa — they're scams.
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 3 weeks or more, and the Kigali Visa Application Centre may have limited appointment slots. Start your application at least 6-8 weeks before your planned travel date to avoid last-minute stress.
Multiple entry is standard
Standard Visitor visas are typically issued with multiple-entry validity, meaning you can enter and leave the UK multiple times during the visa's validity period (usually 2 years). Each stay must not exceed 6 months.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the official UK Visas and Immigration website, select 'Standard Visitor' and fill out the application form. You'll need your passport details, travel plans, and information about your employment or studies. Double-check everything before submitting — mistakes can cause delays.
2
Pay the visa fee and book biometrics
After submitting the form, pay the £115 fee online. Then book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kigali. Appointments are usually available within a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the season.
3
Attend the biometric appointment
Go to the Visa Application Centre on your scheduled date. Bring your passport, the appointment confirmation, and your supporting documents. You'll have your fingerprints and photo taken. The staff will also scan your documents and may ask for additional copies.
4
Wait for the decision
After your appointment, your application is sent to the UK Visas and Immigration office for processing. Standard processing takes about 3 weeks, but it can be longer during peak periods. You can track your application online using the reference number from your appointment.
5
Receive your passport and travel
Once a decision is made, your passport will be returned to you either by courier or for collection at the Visa Application Centre. If approved, you'll find a visa vignette (sticker) inside your passport. Check the dates and details — if anything is wrong, contact the centre immediately. You can then travel to the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing time is about 3 weeks after your biometric appointment. However, it can take longer during peak seasons (summer, Christmas). You can pay extra for priority processing (5 working days) or super priority (next day) if available at the Kigali centre — check with the Visa Application Centre for current options and fees.
Yes, the initial application form is completed online. But you must attend an in-person appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kigali to provide biometrics and submit your passport. There's no fully online process for Rwandan passport holders.
The Standard Visitor visa allows a maximum stay of 6 months per visit. It's usually valid for multiple entries over a period of up to 2 years (or longer if you apply for a longer-term visa). You cannot work or study on this visa.
Yes, you need to show that you can support yourself during your stay without working. Bank statements for the last 6 months are the most common evidence. There's no fixed amount, but you should have enough to cover accommodation, food, and travel costs. If someone else is funding your trip, include their bank statements and a letter of sponsorship.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reasons for refusal and pay the fee again. There's no formal appeal for visitor visas, but you can request an administrative review in some cases. It's best to consult with a visa advisor if you're refused.
No, a UK visa is only valid for the UK. It does not grant access to the Schengen Area or other European countries. You'll need separate visas for those destinations.
No, there is no visa on arrival for Rwandan passport holders. You must obtain a visa before you travel. Arriving without a valid visa will result in being refused entry and sent back.
