Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Thailand
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the day you leave Thailand. Airlines at Arlanda and Kastrup check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang always ask for proof of onward travel within 60 days. Budget airlines like AirAsia and Norwegian check this at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have ready
Officers occasionally ask for a hotel booking or an invitation letter from a host. A printed booking confirmation from Booking.com or Agoda works fine. If staying with friends, have their name, address, and phone number written down.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to have ready
The official requirement is 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family. In practice, immigration rarely asks, but if they do, cash, a bank statement, or a credit card showing available credit works. ATMs at Suvarnabhumi dispense THB at fair rates.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)Thailand Digital Arrival Card — a free 2-minute online pre-registration at tdac.immigration.go.th. Not mandatory, but gets you through the immigration queue faster.
Optional online pre-registration
TDAC is a free 2-minute online form at tdac.immigration.go.th. Fill it in before your flight and you get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at immigration. Not mandatory, but saves 15–30 minutes in the queue at busy times.Register on TDACOptional
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay beyond your 60-day stamp, you'll be fined 500 THB per day (max 20,000 THB). Overstay more than 90 days and you risk a 1-year ban. Set a reminder on your phone.
TDAC saves time
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free and optional, but completing it online before you fly can cut your immigration queue time significantly. Do it at tdac.immigration.go.th.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare Documents Before Departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward flight. Book your first night accommodation. Optionally complete the TDAC form online. Print or save screenshots of your flight booking and hotel confirmation.
2
Arrival at Thai Immigration
At the airport (BKK, DMK, Phuket, etc.), follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, boarding pass, and any requested documents ready. The officer will stamp you in for up to 60 days.
3
Collect Luggage and Exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Thailand and re-enter, or apply for a tourist visa (e.g., 60-day single entry) before you travel. Overstaying costs 500 THB per day (max 20,000 THB) and over 90 days risks a 1-year ban.
No, there is no official proof of funds requirement for Swedish passport holders entering visa-free. However, if you look like you might be working illegally or overstaying, an officer could ask. Having a credit card or some cash (around 20,000 THB equivalent) is a good idea.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Get your passport renewed before you travel. The 6 months are counted from your entry date, not your departure.
No, it's optional. But filling it out online before you arrive can speed up the immigration queue. It's free and takes 2 minutes. If you don't do it, you'll just fill out a paper arrival card on the plane or at the airport.
Yes, Swedish passport holders can enter visa-free at land borders (e.g., from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia). The same 60-day stay applies. However, you may be asked more questions about your travel plans. Keep your onward ticket handy.
You cannot extend the visa-free stay. You have two options: (1) Leave Thailand and re-enter to get a new 60-day stamp (but be aware of 'visa run' scrutiny), or (2) Apply for a 60-day tourist visa from a Thai embassy before you travel. That visa can be extended by 30 days at an immigration office for 1,900 THB.
No, if you are transiting and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you don't need a visa. If you need to enter Thailand (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), you can use the visa-free entry for up to 60 days.
