Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight within 90 days
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Enforcement varies by officer, but having a printed or digital return ticket avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for it, but budget airlines and some check-in counters request a hotel address. Have a booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card balance
Officers almost never check this for Slovak passport holders, but carrying a credit card and a few hundred USD in cash covers you if asked. No fixed minimum amount is published.Recommended

Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. If it's close to expiring, renew it before you travel. Airlines check this at check-in and will deny boarding if it's not valid.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at the airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another major airport. Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' — there are separate queues for Japanese and foreign nationals.
2
Immigration counter
Hand over your passport and the completed arrival card (given on the plane). The officer will check your passport validity, may ask about your return ticket and accommodation, then stamp you in. This usually takes 1-2 minutes.
3
Biometrics and photo
At the counter, you'll be asked to look at a camera for a photo and place both index fingers on a scanner. This is standard for all foreign arrivals.
4
Baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed to customs. If you pre-registered on Visit Japan Web, show the QR code at the automated gate. Otherwise, fill out the paper customs declaration form.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a tourist visa extension is not possible) or leave and re-enter, but re-entry doesn't reset the clock — you'd need to leave Japan for a significant period (usually a few days) before returning.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined, detained, and possibly deported. A record of overstay can affect future visa applications to Japan and other countries. Don't risk it.
If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport, you'll need to enter Japan — and as a Slovak passport holder, you can do that visa-free for up to 90 days.
Technically, the visa-free status is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is in a grey area — many people do it, but strictly speaking, you're not allowed to engage in any paid activity (including remote work for a non-Japanese company) without a proper work visa. If you're just checking emails, you're fine, but don't make it a regular thing.
Report it immediately to the nearest police station (koban) and get a police report. Then contact the Slovak Embassy in Tokyo (or the nearest EU consulate) to apply for an emergency travel document. You'll need that to leave Japan. Keep a photocopy or digital scan of your passport separately.
No, you don't need one — you get visa-free entry automatically. Just show up with your valid passport and return ticket.
It's not a formal requirement, but immigration officers can ask. Have a credit card or bank statement handy just in case. In practice, it's rarely asked for Slovak passport holders.
