Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in South Korea. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date, but immigration only requires it to cover your stay.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from South Korea
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the counter. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Korea ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their contact details. Officers rarely ask, but if you look uncertain, they'll pull you aside for extra questions.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Immigration doesn't enforce a fixed amount, but they want to see you're not arriving broke — about 1,000 USD equivalent is a safe benchmark.Recommended
K-ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
Pre-arrival registration for visa-free visitors
South Korea requires all visa-free travellers to apply for a K-ETA at visa.go.kr before boarding. It costs about 10,000 KRW (roughly 7 USD) and is valid for 2 years. Submit it at least 72 hours before your flight — approval is usually instant but can take longer.Apply for K-ETARequired
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, you will be denied boarding. No exceptions.
No arrival card needed
South Korea scrapped arrival cards for most nationalities in 2023. Just walk up to immigration with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Incheon or Gimpo Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Queues can be long (15–45 minutes). Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Approach the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will ask a few quick questions: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask for your return ticket.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed through customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare, red if you do.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave the country (e.g., a quick trip to Japan) and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. For longer stays, apply for a visa before travel.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
No. South Korea abolished arrival cards for most nationalities in 2023. You just hand over your passport at immigration.
No. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short-term family visits only. Any paid work or study requires the appropriate visa (e.g., E-series work visa, D-2 student visa).
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, detained, and banned from re-entering South Korea for a period (often 1–5 years depending on the length of overstay). Leave before your stamp expires.
If you're transiting through Incheon Airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), no visa is needed. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you can use the visa-free transit program for up to 30 days, provided you have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country.
It's not mandatory for entry, but it's strongly recommended. A simple hospital visit for a broken leg can cost thousands of dollars. Most travel insurance policies cost under $50 for a short trip and cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and lost luggage.
