90 days is generous, but not extendable
You get 90 days visa-free, but there's no way to extend it. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave and re-enter — but be aware that doing this repeatedly can raise questions. Plan your trip within 90 days.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6 months beyond departure) and blank pages. Print or save your return ticket and any proof of funds. If you're transiting through a yellow fever zone, get the vaccination and carry the certificate.
2
Fill in the arrival card on the plane
You'll receive a small arrival card during the flight. Fill it out with your basic details, flight number, and address in South Africa. Keep it with your passport.
3
Go through passport control at the airport
At O.R. Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and arrival card. The officer will check your documents, may ask about your plans, and will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry permit.
4
Collect your bags and proceed through customs
After passport control, collect your luggage and walk through the green channel if you have nothing to declare. Customs officers may randomly select bags for inspection.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave South Africa before the 90 days are up. If you overstay, you'll be declared an undesirable person and could be banned from returning for a period of time.
No, as long as you stay in the international transit area and don't pass through immigration. If you need to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll be admitted under the same visa-free rules (90 days).
No. South African immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival. If it's shorter, you'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border.
South African law doesn't specify a fixed amount. In practice, having a credit card and a bank statement showing a few thousand euros is usually enough. If you're staying with friends or family, a letter of invitation can help.
No. The UAE and Qatar are not yellow fever endemic zones. The certificate is only required if you've been in a country with risk of yellow fever transmission (e.g., Angola, Brazil, Kenya) within 6 days before arriving in South Africa.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism or business visits, not for remote work. If you're just doing occasional emails or calls, it's fine. But if you're planning to work full-time for a foreign employer, you might need a remote work visa. In practice, many digital nomads do it, but it's a grey area.
You'll be fined and could be declared 'undesirable' — a ban that can last from 1 to 5 years. The fine is around 1,000 ZAR per day of overstay, but the ban is the bigger problem. Don't risk it.
