South Africa enforces the 6-month validity rule strictly. If your passport expires before that, you won't be allowed to board your flight. Check your passport now, not at the airport.
90 days is generous, but not extendable
You get 90 days visa-free, but there's no way to extend it. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to leave and re-enter — but be aware that doing this repeatedly can raise questions. Plan your trip within 90 days.

Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6 months beyond departure) and blank pages. Print or save your return ticket and any proof of funds. If you're transiting through a yellow fever zone, get the vaccination and carry the certificate.

Fill in the arrival card on the plane
You'll receive a small arrival card during the flight. Fill it out with your basic details, flight number, and address in South Africa. Keep it with your passport.

Go through passport control at the airport
At O.R. Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and arrival card. The officer will check your documents, may ask about your plans, and will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry permit.

Collect your bags and proceed through customs
After passport control, collect your luggage and walk through the green channel if you have nothing to declare. Customs officers may randomly select bags for inspection.
