Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in the Maldives. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Maldives
Immigration officers ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the arrival counter. Without one, they may deny entry or put you on the next flight out.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel or resort booking confirmation
Most visitors book a resort or guesthouse before arriving — the Maldives is a chain of islands, and you need a confirmed stay to arrange speedboat or seaplane transfers. Have your booking confirmation ready on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Immigration rarely asks for proof of funds, but having a credit card or around $100 per day in cash covers you if they do. ATMs are available in Malé and on resort islands.Recommended
IMUGA arrival declarationMaldives' mandatory online arrival declaration at imuga.immigration.gov.mv. Complete it within 96 hours before departure. This is not a visa — all nationalities get free 30-day entry on arrival.
Online pre-registration required before travel
Complete the free IMUGA arrival declaration at imuga.immigration.gov.mv within 96 hours before your departure. You'll get a QR code — show it at immigration on arrival. This is not a visa; all nationalities get a free 30-day entry on arrival.Open IMUGA formRequired
IMUGA saves time
Completing the IMUGA form online before you fly means you'll breeze through immigration. Without it, you'll be directed to a manual processing desk, which can take 20-30 minutes longer.
No visa on arrival for overstays
If you overstay your 30-day visa, you'll be fined 50 MVR per day (about 3.25 USD). Overstays of more than 90 days can lead to deportation and a ban. Apply for an extension before your visa expires.
