Thai passport holders can enter Malaysia without a visa for stays up to 30 days. This visa-free arrangement covers tourism, business, and transit. As of 2026, no pre-arrival visa is needed, but you must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online within 3 days before your trip.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid on arrival
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Malaysia. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required by Malaysian immigration, but some airlines enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at entry. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — budget airlines at KLIA and Penang are known to check this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your first few nights. If staying with friends, have their address and phone number written down — officers at land borders sometimes ask for this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have access to at least 1,000 MYR (about 8,000 THB) in cash or a credit card. Immigration rarely asks for proof, but having it avoids delays if questioned.Recommended
MDAC is mandatory — do it before you fly
The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is not optional. Complete it online within 3 days of your arrival. Without it, you may be denied boarding or entry. It's free and takes 5 minutes.
Overstaying is expensive and risky
Overstay fines are MYR 30 per day (capped at MYR 1,000), but repeated overstays can lead to a ban. If you need more time, apply for a 30-day extension at any immigration office before your visa-free period ends.
Long-term stay options available
If you want to stay longer than 30 days, consider the MM2H retirement visa (up to 5 years, requires MYR 1.5 million liquid assets) or the DE Rantau Digital Nomad Pass (up to 12 months, minimum income MYR 24,000/year). Both allow multiple entries and family stays.

What happens at the border

1
Complete MDAC online
Go to https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main and fill in your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Do this 1–3 days before you fly — not earlier, not at the airport. Save the confirmation PDF or screenshot.
2
Arrive at Malaysian immigration
At KLIA, Penang, or any land border, join the foreign passport queue. Have your passport, MDAC confirmation, and return ticket ready. The officer will ask your purpose of stay and duration — answer clearly. They'll stamp you in for up to 30 days.
3
Collect baggage and exit
After clearing immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel and proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Malaysia.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend once for up to 30 days at any immigration office. The cost is MYR 100 (~USD 21.50) per extension. You'll need your passport, MDAC, a hotel booking or sponsor letter, and proof of funds. Apply before your initial 30 days expire — overstaying costs MYR 30 per day (capped at MYR 1,000).
No. Thai passport holders can transit airside through any Malaysian airport for up to 120 hours without a visa, as long as you have a confirmed onward ticket and don't pass through immigration. If you leave the transit area, you'll need visa-free entry or a visa. Note: transiting through Sabah or Sarawak may require additional permits.
You'll be fined MYR 30 (~USD 6.50) per day, with a maximum cap of MYR 1,000 (~USD 215). Pay at the immigration office before you leave. Overstaying can also lead to a ban or denial of future entry, so avoid it. If you need more time, apply for an extension before your 30 days are up.
No. The visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, business meetings, or transit. For work, you need an Employment Pass (employer-sponsored, minimum salary MYR 5,000/month). For study, you need a Student Pass (requires acceptance letter from an approved institution). Both are applied for before arrival.
The top reasons are: insufficient funds (carry at least MYR 1,000), no return ticket, suspicious travel patterns (multiple short trips back-to-back), incomplete documents (expired passport, no accommodation proof), and previous overstay history. About 30% of denials are due to insufficient funds, 25% to no return ticket.
No vaccines are required for entry unless you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tdap, and MMR. Malaria risk is low in cities but consider prophylaxis if visiting rural Sabah or Sarawak. Travel insurance is strongly advised — healthcare costs can be high for foreigners.
Yes. Thai passport holders can enter via land borders like Padang Besar (Perlis), Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah), or Sadao (Songkhla). The same visa-free rules apply — 30 days, MDAC required. Land crossings are usually quicker than airports, but officers may ask more questions about your itinerary. Have your return ticket and accommodation ready.
