Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Taiwan. Taiwan does not require 6 months of remaining validity for visa-free entry, but your airline may enforce this — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers at Taoyuan and Kaohsiung airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready — they may scan the barcode.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means for your stay
You should have access to at least 20,000 TWD (around 22,000 THB) or equivalent per person for the duration. A bank statement or credit card with sufficient limit is usually enough — officers rarely ask, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Taiwan. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. No exceptions.
No visa, no extension
The 14-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need more time, apply for a visitor visa at the Taiwan Embassy in Bangkok or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chiang Mai before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), book a return/onward ticket, and save a screenshot of your accommodation booking. If you want extra peace of mind, get travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) or Kaohsiung (KHH)
Follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' immigration. Join the queue for visa-free entry. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and where you're staying.
3
Receive entry stamp and stay duration
The officer will stamp your passport with '14 days' or '0-14 days'. Count your days from the next day. Overstaying even by a day can result in fines or a ban.
4
Exit and collect luggage
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim and customs. No arrival declaration form is needed for visa-free entry.
