Turkish passport holders can visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. This policy applies in 2026 for tourism, business meetings, and short-term visits. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to cover the full stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound ticket from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Enforcement varies by officer, but having a printed or digital return ticket avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having one can mean a secondary inspection.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Immigration may ask how you plan to support yourself. A recent bank statement showing enough for your stay (roughly ¥10,000 per day) or a credit card usually satisfies them.Recommended
Visit Japan Web registrationJapan's digital pre-arrival registration at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp. Enter passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai.

Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Japan. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration will deny entry if it's even a day short. Renew early if needed.
Visit Japan Web can save you time
Pre-registering at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp generates a QR code that lets you skip the paper arrival card and use automated kiosks. It's free and takes 5 minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket and first night hotel booking. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web to get a QR code.
2
Arrive at Japanese airport
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other international airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'Arrivals'. Have your passport and QR code (or paper arrival card) ready.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport and any required documents. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport and you're in.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed to customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You may be asked to scan your passport at an automated kiosk.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (like a tourist visa or work visa) before you travel. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban.
If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you generally don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport during a layover, you'll need to qualify for visa-free entry (which Turkish passport holders do for up to 90 days). Check with your airline for specific transit rules.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and denied entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions.
No, it's not mandatory for visa-free entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Japan are high, and a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of dollars a day. Many travellers buy a policy from SafetyWing or similar.
Yes, you'll be given a paper arrival card on the flight. Fill it out in English or Japanese. If you've registered on Visit Japan Web, you can skip the paper card and use the QR code at the automated kiosk.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. You cannot work (paid or unpaid) or study in a formal course. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa before you travel.
While not routinely required, it's smart to have a bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself. A few hundred dollars per day of stay is a safe benchmark. Keep a digital copy on your phone.
