Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Land at Cairo International and head to the bank window before immigration — pay $25 USD in cash (exact change preferred) and get a sticker placed in your passport. The visa is valid for a single entry up to 30 days. Have your passport photo ready, though they rarely ask for one.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Egypt. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of Egypt. A printed booking confirmation or an e-ticket on your phone works. Without one, you risk being refused entry and sent back on the next flight.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a pre-booked hotel. A printout or a screenshot on your phone is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Carry at least $1,000 USD in cash or have a credit card with a visible limit. Immigration rarely checks, but if asked, you need to show you can cover your stay. ATMs are available at the airport but have low withdrawal limits.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa fee must be paid in cash — USD, euros, or pounds sterling. Credit cards are not accepted. Bring exact change to avoid delays. ATMs are available but queues can be long.
Sharm El Sheikh special entry
If you fly directly to Sharm El Sheikh and stay only in the South Sinai resort area, you may get a free 15-day entry stamp instead of a paid visa. This does not allow travel outside the region. Confirm with your airline before departure.

What happens at the border

1
Land at an Egyptian airport
You'll arrive at Cairo International (CAI), Hurghada (HRG), Sharm El Sheikh (SSH), or another major airport. Follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Bank' before immigration.
2
Buy the visa sticker at the bank counter
Before you join the immigration queue, go to the bank counter (usually near the visa on arrival area). Pay in cash: USD $25 or equivalent in euros/pounds. You'll receive a sticker. Keep the receipt.
3
Affix the sticker to your passport
Peel the sticker and place it on a blank page in your passport. Do not cover any existing stamps or visas.
4
Proceed to immigration
Join the queue for foreign passports. Hand over your passport with the sticker, your boarding pass, and your return ticket if asked. The officer will stamp you in.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from baggage claim, then proceed through customs. You're free to enter Egypt.

Frequently asked questions

The visa on arrival costs USD $25 (or equivalent in euros or pounds sterling). You pay in cash at the bank counter before immigration. Credit cards are not accepted, so bring exact change.
The visa on arrival is typically valid for 30 days. It is a single-entry visa. If you need to stay longer, you can apply for an extension at the Passport and Immigration Office in Cairo or other major cities, but it's not guaranteed.
Yes, the visa on arrival is available at all international airports in Egypt, including Cairo (CAI), Hurghada (HRG), Sharm El Sheikh (SSH), Luxor (LXR), and Marsa Alam (RMF). It is not available at land borders or seaports.
If you stay airside and your layover is less than 12 hours, you generally do not need a visa. If you want to leave the airport or have a longer layover, you'll need a visa on arrival. Check with your airline for specific transit rules.
You will be denied boarding by your airline and refused entry by Egyptian immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. There are no exceptions.
Extensions are possible but not automatic. You must apply at the Passport and Immigration Office in Cairo (or other major cities) before your 30 days expire. The fee is around EGP 1,000-1,500. Processing takes a few days. Overstaying without an extension incurs fines.
If you fly directly to Sharm El Sheikh and stay only in the resort area (South Sinai), you may get a free 15-day entry stamp instead of a visa. This is a special arrangement for certain nationalities, including Taiwan. Confirm with your airline or tour operator before you go.
