Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight within 90 days
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai ask for a return or onward ticket about half the time. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing departure within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Immigration rarely asks for it, but budget airlines sometimes check at check-in. Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a written invitation from your host in Japan.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or card balance
Officers almost never request proof of funds for Taiwanese passport holders. If asked, show a bank statement or credit card with a few hundred thousand yen available.Recommended
Visit Japan Web registrationJapan's digital pre-arrival registration at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp. Enter passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai.
Digital pre-arrival form
Register at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp up to 2 weeks before your flight. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai — skips the paper customs form.Register on Visit Japan WebOptional
Visit Japan Web saves time
Pre-register at https://vjw-lp.digital.go.jp before your flight. You'll get a QR code that lets you skip the paper arrival card and customs declaration. It's free and takes about 10 minutes.
Overstaying is serious
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. Overstaying even a day can lead to fines, detention, and a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket. Save your hotel booking confirmation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web to get a QR code.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'.
3
Fill out arrival card (if not using Visit Japan Web)
You'll get a paper arrival card on the plane or at the airport. Fill in your passport info, flight number, hotel address, and length of stay. If you used Visit Japan Web, just show your QR code.
4
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport and arrival card (or QR code). The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?' and 'Where are you staying?' Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry.
5
Collect luggage and clear customs
Pick up your bags from the carousel, then go through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you have items to declare (e.g., large amounts of cash, restricted goods), use the red channel.
