Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen area
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen zone. The Netherlands enforces this strictly at check-in and at the border. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area within 90 days
Immigration at Schiphol Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works. Airlines also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking, hostel confirmation, or invitation letter
Have a printed or digital booking confirmation for your entire stay. If staying with a friend, carry their address and phone number. Immigration officers at Schiphol sometimes ask for this, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement, cash, or credit card showing sufficient means
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover €55 per day of your stay. Immigration rarely asks for this for Taiwanese passport holders, but having a recent statement ready avoids delays.Recommended
90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just the Netherlands. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries (e.g., France, Germany) in the past 180 days, that counts toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine up to €4,000 and a re-entry ban for up to 5 years. Set a calendar reminder to leave before day 90. If you need to stay longer, apply for a long-stay visa well in advance.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Schiphol Airport (or other entry point)
You'll join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and ask about your plans. Answer honestly — typical questions: 'How long are you staying?' and 'What's the purpose?'
2
Present documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket and hotel booking. The officer may also ask for proof of funds — a credit card or bank statement works. The whole process takes 2-5 minutes.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter — if it says less than 90 days, ask for clarification.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (MVV) before traveling. Overstaying can result in fines up to €4,000 and a ban from the Schengen area for up to 5 years.
If you're staying for less than 90 days, no registration is needed. If you plan to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must register with the local municipality (gemeente) within 5 days of arrival.
You must have a valid passport for the entire stay. If it expires, you'll need to renew it at the Taiwan representative office in the Netherlands (Taipei Representative Office in the Netherlands). Do not overstay while waiting.
Technically, the visa-free stay is for tourism and business meetings, not for remote work for a foreign employer. However, short-term remote work (a few days) is generally tolerated. For longer periods, you may need a digital nomad visa or work permit. Check with the Dutch immigration service (IND) if unsure.
Overstaying is a violation. You may be fined up to €4,000, banned from the Schengen area for up to 5 years, and have difficulty entering other EU countries. Always leave before your 90 days expire.
If you're transiting through a Dutch airport (e.g., Schiphol) and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the transit area or your layover is overnight, you'll need to enter the Schengen area under the visa-free rules.
Yes. The 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen area (27 European countries). You can travel freely between them, but your total stay in the Schengen zone cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.
