Ugandan passport holders need a visa to travel to Canada. You must apply for a visitor visa (TRV) before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eTA option for Ugandans. Plan ahead: processing times vary, so apply at least 8–12 weeks before your trip.

Visa required — no exceptions
Ugandan passport holders cannot enter Canada without a pre-approved visa. There is no visa-on-arrival, eTA, or waiver. Apply well in advance — processing can take 2 months or more.
Biometrics are mandatory
Most applicants must give fingerprints and a photo at a Visa Application Centre. In Uganda, the VAC is in Kampala. You'll need to book an appointment and pay the biometrics fee (CAD 85). This is a one-time step — biometrics are valid for 10 years.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visitor visa online
Go to the IRCC website and create an account. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photos, bank statements, travel itinerary), and pay the fee (CAD 100 for a single entry, CAD 500 for a multiple-entry visa). You'll get a confirmation and a biometrics instruction letter.
2
Give biometrics at a VAC
Book an appointment at the nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC) — for Uganda, that's in Kampala. Bring your passport, the biometrics letter, and the fee receipt. They'll take your fingerprints and photo. This is quick — about 15 minutes.
3
Wait for processing
Standard processing time for Uganda is around 4–8 weeks, but can be longer. Check the IRCC website for current estimates. You'll get an email when a decision is made. If approved, your passport will be stamped or you'll get a visa vignette.
4
Travel to Canada
At the airport in Canada, go to the 'Visitors' queue. Present your passport with the visa, your return ticket, and any supporting documents (hotel booking, insurance). The border officer may ask about your plans — answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor record showing how long you can stay (usually up to 6 months).

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing time is 4–8 weeks, but it can take longer during peak seasons (summer, December). Check the IRCC website for current estimates. Apply well in advance — at least 3 months before your trip.
No. There is no visa-on-arrival for Ugandan passport holders. You must get a visa before you travel. The only exception is if you're transiting through a Canadian airport to a third country — you may need a transit visa, which also requires advance application.
The application fee is CAD 100 for a single-entry visa or CAD 500 for a multiple-entry visa (valid for up to 10 years). Biometrics cost an additional CAD 85. Fees are non-refundable even if your application is refused.
Not at the application stage, but you should have a tentative travel itinerary. At the border, immigration may ask for a return or onward ticket. It's best to have one booked (refundable if possible) before you travel.
You can reapply, but you must address the reasons for refusal. Common reasons: insufficient funds, weak ties to Uganda (job, family, property), or incomplete documents. Consider consulting an immigration consultant or lawyer. There is no appeal process for visitor visa refusals.
Yes, you can apply for an extension before your current status expires. File online with IRCC, pay the fee (CAD 100), and explain why you need more time. Processing takes about 4–6 weeks. Overstaying without permission can affect future visa applications.
Yes, if you're a Ugandan passport holder, you need a transit visa even if you're just changing planes and staying airside. Apply for a Transit Visa (TRV) — it's the same process as a visitor visa but cheaper (CAD 50). You must have a confirmed onward ticket and a visa for your final destination if required.
