Ugandan passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel — there's no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Ugandan citizens. Plan ahead, as the application process involves an online form, an appointment at a visa application centre, and a decision that can take several weeks.

No eVisa option for Ugandan citizens
Even though the UK has an eVisa system for some nationalities, Ugandan passport holders are not eligible. You must apply through the standard visa application process at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kampala. Don't fall for third-party websites that claim to offer an 'e-visa' — they're scams.
Plan for processing delays
Visa processing can take longer than the advertised 3 weeks, especially between June and September. If you have travel dates, apply at least 2 months in advance. You can track your application online, but there's no way to speed it up without paying for priority service.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the UK Visas and Immigration website (gov.uk/standard-visitor-visa) and fill out the application form. You'll need to create an account, answer questions about your trip, and pay the £115 fee online. Save your application number — you'll need it later.
2
Book and attend your biometric appointment
After submitting the form, you'll be directed to book an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kampala. Choose a date that gives you enough time to gather documents. At the appointment, bring your printed application, passport, and supporting documents. You'll give fingerprints and a photo.
3
Wait for a decision
Standard processing takes about 3 weeks, but it can be longer during peak seasons. You can track your application online using your reference number. If approved, your passport will be returned with a vignette (sticker) in it — check that the dates and details are correct.
4
Travel to the UK
Arrive at a UK airport (e.g., Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester) and go through Border Control. Have your passport with the vignette ready, and be prepared to answer questions about your trip. The vignette is your entry clearance — you'll be granted leave to enter for up to 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

The fee for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa is £115 (about UGX 550,000, depending on the exchange rate). If you need a longer visa (2, 5, or 10 years), the fee is higher — £432, £771, and £963 respectively. You pay online when you submit your application.
Standard processing takes about 3 weeks after your biometric appointment. However, it can take longer during peak seasons (summer and Christmas). You can pay extra for priority service — currently £250 for a decision within 5 working days, or £500 for a decision within 1 working day, if available at the Kampala centre.
No. You must complete the online application, but you also need to attend an in-person biometric appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kampala. There is no eVisa option for Ugandan citizens — the online form is just the first step.
The strongest evidence is a stable job or business in Uganda, family ties (e.g., marriage certificate, children's birth certificates), property ownership, and a clear travel itinerary. Bank statements showing regular income and savings also help. The visa officer wants to see that you have reasons to come back.
No. The Standard Visitor visa is not extendable. You must leave the UK before your visa expires. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type (e.g., work or study) from Uganda, not from within the UK.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the issues raised (e.g., insufficient funds, weak ties to Uganda). The application fee is not refunded. There's no formal appeal for visitor visas, but you can request an administrative review in some cases — check the refusal letter for details.
No, not for a standard 6-month visitor visa. TB tests are only required if you're staying in the UK for more than 6 months (e.g., for work or study). If you're just visiting, you can skip this step.
