Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You need a visa to enter Egypt. Apply online through the official eVisa portal at visa2egypt.gov.eg. Processing takes up to 7 business days, so apply at least 2 weeks before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Egypt. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Egypt
Immigration officers at Cairo Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone showing your flight out of Egypt within your visa validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Egypt. Officers at passport control may ask to see where you are staying, especially for first-time visitors.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly $1,000 USD for a week-long trip. Immigration may ask how you plan to cover your expenses while in Egypt.Recommended
Visa on arrival is cash only
If you plan to get a visa on arrival at the airport, bring $25 USD in cash per person. ATMs are available after immigration, but the visa counter before immigration does not accept cards or other currencies.
eSIM saves time at the airport
Instead of queuing for a local SIM at the airport, buy an Airalo eSIM before you travel. It activates automatically when you land, so you have data immediately for maps, translation, and ride-hailing apps.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-visa online
Go to the official Egypt e-visa portal (visa2egypt.gov.eg) and fill out the application. Upload a passport-style photo and your passport data page. Pay the fee (around $25-$30 for single entry) and wait 3-7 business days for approval. Print the approval email or save the PDF on your phone.
2
Arrive at Egyptian airport
At Cairo International or other major airports, proceed to immigration. If you have an e-visa, show the printed or digital approval along with your passport. If you're getting a visa on arrival, go to the bank counter before immigration to purchase a visa sticker (about $25 USD, cash only). Then queue at immigration.
3
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport, visa (e-visa or on-arrival sticker), and return ticket if asked. The officer may ask about your hotel and purpose of visit. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport and you're in.
