Apply early — do not book flights yet
Australian visa processing for Bangladeshi applicants can take weeks. Do not book non-refundable flights or hotels until your visa is granted. If your visa is refused, you will lose that money.
Visa is electronic
Once granted, your Australian visa is linked electronically to your passport number. You do not need a physical visa label. When you check in for your flight, the airline will verify your visa electronically. Keep a copy of your visa grant notification with you.
Overstaying is serious
Australian immigration is strict about overstaying. If you stay beyond your visa's expiry, you could be detained, deported, and banned from returning for up to 3 years. Always leave before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Determine your visa subclass
Most Bangladeshi travelers apply for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) for tourism or visiting family. If you are going for business, you might need a Business Visitor visa (subclass 600) or a different subclass. Check the Australian Home Affairs website to confirm which visa fits your purpose.
2
Create an ImmiAccount and apply online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website and create an ImmiAccount. Fill out the application form, upload your documents (passport scan, photo, financial evidence, itinerary), and pay the fee. You can also apply through an Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC) in Dhaka if you prefer in-person help.
3
Attend biometrics appointment (if required)
If asked, book an appointment at the AVAC in Dhaka (or another designated center) to provide your fingerprints and photo. Bring your passport and the appointment confirmation. This usually takes 15-20 minutes.
4
Wait for processing
Processing times vary — for Bangladeshi applicants, it can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. You can track your application status online through ImmiAccount. Do not book non-refundable flights until your visa is granted.
5
Receive your visa grant and travel
Once approved, you will receive a visa grant notification by email. This includes your visa conditions and validity. Print a copy or save it on your phone. At Australian immigration, present your passport — the visa is linked electronically to your passport number, so you do not need a physical label.

Frequently asked questions

No. Australia does not offer visa-on-arrival for Bangladeshi passport holders. You must obtain a visa before you travel. The only exception is if you hold a valid visa from another country that allows transit — but you still need a transit visa (subclass 771) if you are passing through Australia.
Processing times vary. For a Visitor visa (subclass 600), it can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. Some applications are processed faster, but it is best to apply at least 2 months before your planned travel date. You can check current processing times on the Home Affairs website.
The application fee for a Visitor visa (subclass 600) is AUD 190 (approximately BDT 15,000, depending on the exchange rate). This fee is non-refundable, even if your visa is refused. There may be additional charges for biometrics or if you use a visa service center.
Possibly. Australian immigration often requires biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) from Bangladeshi applicants. If required, you will be notified after you submit your online application. You will need to visit the Australian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka to provide them.
No. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) is not extendable. You must leave Australia before your visa expires. If you want to stay longer, you would need to apply for a different visa (like a student or work visa) from within Australia, but that is a separate process and not guaranteed.
If your visa is refused, you will receive a letter explaining the reasons. You can appeal the decision to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) within a certain timeframe, or you can reapply with additional evidence. The application fee is not refunded. Common reasons for refusal include insufficient funds, incomplete documentation, or doubts about your intention to return to Bangladesh.
Yes. Even if you are only changing planes in Australia, you need a Transit visa (subclass 771) unless you are from a visa-exempt country. Bangladeshi citizens are not visa-exempt, so you must apply for a transit visa before you travel. The fee is the same as a Visitor visa (AUD 190).
