Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the counter. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — budget airlines sometimes check this before issuing a boarding pass.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation, Airbnb confirmation, or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Have access to at least 500 MYR (around 120 USD) per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card is usually enough — officers rarely demand cash.Recommended
MDAC is mandatory
All foreign visitors must complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card online before arrival. Do it 1–3 days before your flight. Without it, you may face delays or be denied entry.
Overstaying is costly
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of MYR 500–1000 and possible deportation. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Complete MDAC online
Go to the official MDAC portal (https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main) and fill in your passport, flight, and accommodation details. Do this 1–3 days before your flight. Save the QR code or print the confirmation.
2
Arrive at Malaysian airport
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, follow signs to 'Foreign Passport' immigration counters. Have your passport, boarding pass, and MDAC QR code ready.
3
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask about your stay duration, hotel, and return ticket. Answer clearly. They will stamp your passport with a 90-day visit pass.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now free to enter Malaysia.
