What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather your passport, completed visa application form, photo, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, bank statements, and any other supporting documents. Make copies of everything.
2
Submit your application at the Japanese embassy or consulate
In Colombia, the Japanese Embassy is in Bogotá (Carrera 7, No. 71-21, Torre B, Piso 11). You must apply in person or through an authorized travel agency. No online submission. Processing takes 5–10 business days.
3
Pay the visa fee
Single-entry visa: approx. ¥3,000 (about COP 85,000). Double-entry or multiple-entry: ¥6,000 (about COP 170,000). Fees are paid at the embassy in Colombian pesos at the current exchange rate.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing is 5 business days, but can take up to 10. The embassy may call you for an interview or ask for additional documents. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
5
Collect your passport with visa
Once approved, you pick up your passport from the embassy. Check the visa sticker carefully: name, dates, number of entries, and validity period.
6
Arrive in Japan and go through immigration
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or any other airport, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation address ready. You'll be fingerprinted and photographed. The whole process usually takes 15–30 minutes.
