Danish passport holders can visit Spain without a visa for short stays. Since both countries are in the Schengen Area, you can travel freely for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Just ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Danish passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Spain. Spain does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but your airline may enforce their own policy — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Spanish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines often check this at check-in too. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details. Officers at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat sometimes ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Spain requires visitors to show at least €100 per person per day (minimum €900 total) for the duration of your stay. A bank statement, credit card, or cash works. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show it.Recommended
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day allowance covers all Schengen countries combined, not just Spain. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or other Schengen states, those days count toward your total. Use the EU's Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is critical
Even though you don't need a visa, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines may deny boarding if your passport doesn't meet this requirement. Check your passport now, not at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave Denmark, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Also download an eSIM if you plan to use one.
2
Arrive at the airport in Spain
When you land at any Spanish airport (Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, etc.), follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'EU/Schengen' lanes. As a Danish citizen, you can use the EU lane.
3
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Show supporting documents if asked
The officer may request to see your return ticket or accommodation booking. Have them ready on your phone or printed. This is rare for Danish citizens but possible.
5
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. Keep your passport safe.
6
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Unless you have something to declare, walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel.

You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day rolling window. This applies to all Schengen countries combined, not just Spain. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, count those days too.
For stays longer than 90 days, you need a national visa or residence permit. Apply at the Spanish consulate in Denmark before you travel. Options include work, study, or non-lucrative residence visas.
Yes, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Spain. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
No, the 90-day Schengen stay cannot be extended for tourism. You must leave before your 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area.
Technically, Spanish immigration can ask for proof of sufficient funds (around €100 per day of stay), but this is rarely requested from Danish citizens. Still, having a credit card or cash is wise.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine, deportation, or a re-entry ban. Always track your days carefully — use the Schengen calculator app if needed.
