As a Danish passport holder, you can travel to Portugal visa-free for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This has been the case for years and remains unchanged in 2026. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Danish passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Portugal. As a Schengen member, Portugal does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for EU passport holders — your passport just needs to cover the dates you are in the country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Lisbon and Porto airports routinely asks for a return or onward ticket. Show a flight, train, or bus ticket leaving the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free window. Budget airlines check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed declaration from a host ready. If staying with friends, a simple letter with their address and contact number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Portugal does not publish a fixed daily amount, but officers expect roughly €75–€100 per day. A bank statement, credit card, or cash in euros covers this. They rarely ask EU citizens, but have something ready.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries combined. Days spent in France, Germany, Spain, etc. all count toward the same 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is critical
Portuguese immigration strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Check your passport now.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Portuguese border control
At Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) or any other entry point, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport ready. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask about your stay duration and return ticket.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. If asked, show your return ticket (screenshot on phone is fine) and accommodation booking. Answer questions clearly — you're visiting for tourism, business, or family. No visa is needed.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After border control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Unless you're carrying restricted items, you'll walk straight through. Welcome to Portugal.
