Italian passport holders need a visa to enter the United States for tourism or business in 2026. The most common option is the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) under the Visa Waiver Program, which allows stays up to 90 days. You must apply online before departure and receive approval.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
US visa application
Visa required
You need a visa to enter the United States. Start your application at the US Department of State visa portal. Schedule an interview at the US embassy or consulate in Italy — wait times vary by location and season.Apply for US visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in the US. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by US law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at US ports of entry routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return ticket to Italy or a ticket to your next destination ready — a printed itinerary or digital copy on your phone works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your US host with their address and phone number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
You may be asked to show you can cover your stay. Carry bank statements or credit card statements showing sufficient funds — no set minimum, but $100–$200 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
ESTA is not a visa — don't confuse them
ESTA is an electronic travel authorization under the Visa Waiver Program. It's not a visa. If you plan to work, study full-time, or stay longer than 90 days, you need a proper visa from the US embassy.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your entry date. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for ESTA. The ESTA is linked to your passport number — if you renew your passport, you need a new ESTA.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for ESTA online
Go to the official ESTA website (https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/). Fill in your personal and passport details, answer security questions, and pay the fee (about $21 USD). Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 72 hours before your flight.
2
Check your passport validity
Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after your entry date. If not, renew it before applying for ESTA. Also check you have at least 1 blank page for the entry stamp.
3
Book your flight and accommodation
Book a round-trip flight and your first night's accommodation. Keep the booking confirmations handy — either printed or as screenshots on your phone.
4
Arrive at the airport and check in
At check-in, the airline will verify your ESTA approval. They may also ask to see your return ticket. Have your passport and ESTA confirmation ready.
5
Go through US immigration on arrival
At the airport, follow signs for 'Foreign Passports' or 'Visitors'. You'll be interviewed by a CBP officer. They'll ask about your trip purpose, where you're staying, and how long you'll be in the US. Answer honestly. They may take your fingerprints and photo.

No, you don't need a traditional visa. You can travel under the Visa Waiver Program with an approved ESTA. Apply online at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/ at least 72 hours before your flight. The ESTA costs about $21 USD and is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires.
You can stay up to 90 days per visit. You cannot extend your stay beyond 90 days. If you overstay, you risk being banned from the Visa Waiver Program.
If your ESTA is denied, you must apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa at the US embassy in Rome or the consulate in Milan. This requires an interview, costs $160 USD, and processing can take several weeks. Plan ahead.
No. ESTA is for tourism, business meetings, or short-term study (like a language course under 18 hours per week). You cannot work for a US employer or enroll in a full-time academic program. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa.
Bring your valid passport, printed or digital ESTA approval, return flight ticket, and proof of accommodation for your first night. It's also wise to have travel insurance details and a copy of your itinerary.
You'll be interviewed by a CBP officer. They'll ask about your trip purpose, where you're staying, and how long you'll be in the US. They may take your fingerprints and a photo. Answer honestly and have your documents ready. Common airports like JFK, LAX, and MIA have separate queues for foreign visitors.
Yes, you can enter the US via land borders from Canada or Mexico with an approved ESTA. The same 90-day limit applies from the date of first entry into the US. Keep your passport and ESTA approval handy at the border crossing.
