Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before departure
Sri Lankan passport holders need an eVisa to enter Malaysia. Apply at the official Malaysia eVisa portal. Processing takes 1–3 working days, and you must print the eVisa approval letter to present at immigration.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Malaysia. Immigration officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport check this strictly — airlines also enforce it before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
You need a confirmed onward or return ticket out of Malaysia. Immigration at KLIA and other entry points routinely asks for proof of onward travel — budget airlines may deny boarding without it.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Carry at least 500 USD in cash or have a credit card with sufficient limit. Immigration may ask to see evidence of financial means for your stay — bank statements or travel money cards work fine.Recommended
Apply early
eVisa processing can take up to 3 business days. Don't wait until the last minute — apply at least a week before your flight.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for 6 months from the day you enter Malaysia. If it's less, your eVisa will be rejected. Renew your passport first.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Malaysia eVisa portal (windowmalaysia.my). Fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online. Processing usually takes 1–3 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get an email with the eVisa PDF. Print a copy and save it on your phone. You'll show it at immigration on arrival.
3
Arrive at a Malaysian airport
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, go to the foreign passport queue. Hand over your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket. The officer may ask about your accommodation and travel plans.
4
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and allowed stay. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the dates are correct.
