Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at evisa.xuatnhhcanh.gov.vn. The eVisa costs $25 USD, allows single or multiple entry, and is valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days — apply at least a week before your flight to be safe.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready — they may deny entry if you can't show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have at least $500 USD in cash or a credit card statement. Immigration may ask to see it, especially if you're arriving without a return ticket or hotel booking.Recommended
eVisa fee is non-refundable
If your application is rejected, you won't get your money back. Double-check your photo and passport scan before submitting. Use the official government website only — third-party sites charge extra.
Keep your eVisa accessible offline
Internet in Vietnam can be patchy at immigration. Save a PDF of your eVisa on your phone and print a paper copy. Also screenshot your return ticket and hotel booking.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnam eVisa website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page, and pay the fee (usually around $25 USD). Processing takes 3-5 working days. You'll receive the eVisa by email as a PDF.
2
Print or save your eVisa
Once approved, print a paper copy of the eVisa and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at airline check-in and at Vietnamese immigration.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before you leave for the airport, gather: your passport (valid 6+ months), printed eVisa, return/onward ticket, and first night hotel booking. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive in Vietnam and go through immigration
At any international airport in Vietnam (e.g., Noi Bai in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang), follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Foreign Passports'. Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer will stamp you in. No separate visa-on-arrival letter or queue is needed.
