Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Apply on arrival at Tanzania airports and land borders
Mongolian passport holders can get a single-entry visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro International Airport, and select land borders. Pay the visa fee in cash (USD) — $50 for single entry, $100 for multiple entry. Have a printed copy of your hotel booking and return ticket ready for the visa officer.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date
Tanzania strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Your passport must have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tanzania
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. If you arrive without one, they may deny entry or require you to buy a ticket at the airport. A printed copy or a screenshot on your phone works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or letter of invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Tanzania. Immigration may ask for it during the visa-on-arrival process. A booking confirmation from Booking.com or Agoda is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration rarely asks, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Cash only for visa on arrival
The visa counter only accepts cash — US dollars in crisp, undamaged bills. No cards, no local currency. Have the exact amount ready to avoid delays.
E-visa option available
You can apply for an e-visa online before you travel. It costs the same as the visa on arrival ($50) but lets you skip the queue at the airport. Apply at least 3 weeks ahead.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro Airport, or any land border, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue at the visa counter — not the regular passport control line.
2
Submit documents and pay
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (you'll get it on the plane or at the counter), and your return ticket if asked. Pay the visa fee in USD cash. The officer will process and issue the visa sticker.
3
Passport control
After getting the visa, proceed to the passport control booth. The officer will stamp you in. Keep the visa sticker intact — don't peel it off.
4
Collect luggage and exit
Head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're in.
