Apply before you book non-refundable flights
Don't buy plane tickets until your eVisa is approved. Processing times vary, and if there's a delay or a document issue, you could lose money on flights you can't use.
The eVisa is not extendable
Whatever number of days you're granted at entry is what you get. Overstaying leads to fines and potential re-entry bans. If you think you might want to stay longer, apply for the right visa type from the start.
Print everything
South African immigration and airline staff still like paper. Print your eVisa approval, return ticket, and hotel booking. Phone batteries die — paper doesn't.
What happens at the border

Check your passport expiry
Look at the expiry date. It needs to be at least 6 months after the day you plan to enter South Africa. If it's not, renew your Mongolian passport first — everything else depends on this.

Gather your documents
Scan or photograph: your passport bio page, a recent passport-style photo, your return flight booking, hotel confirmation, and 3 months of bank statements. Save them as PDFs or JPGs on your computer — you'll upload them during the application.

Apply for the eVisa online
Go to South Africa's official eVisa portal and create an account. Fill in the form carefully — your name and passport number must match your passport exactly. Upload your documents and pay the fee by card.

Wait for approval
Processing usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks depending on volume. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the approval email. Check your spam folder — approvals sometimes land there.

Print your eVisa approval
Once approved, print at least two copies of the approval letter. Airlines at Chinggis Khaan International Airport will ask to see it at check-in, and immigration at OR Tambo in Johannesburg will want it too.

Arrive in South Africa
At passport control, hand over your passport and the printed eVisa approval. You may be asked for your return ticket and accommodation details. Answer honestly and keep it brief. You'll get an entry stamp — check it shows the correct number of days.
