Apply for the ETA well in advance
While approval is usually fast, don't risk it. Apply at least 5 days before your flight. If your ETA is rejected (rare but possible), you'll need time to reapply or adjust your plans.
Use the official ETA website only
The only official site is https://eta.gov.lk/. Many third-party sites look official but charge inflated fees. Stick to the government portal to avoid scams.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application form. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a valid email address. Pay the fee (around $35–$50 depending on your nationality) with a credit or debit card. You'll get a confirmation email with a reference number.
2
Wait for approval
Most ETAs are approved within 24–72 hours. Check your email (including spam folder) for the approval notice. Print a copy or save it on your phone — you'll need to show it at check-in and upon arrival.
3
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB)
After landing in Colombo, follow the signs to 'Immigration' or 'ETA Holders'. Have your passport, ETA approval, and onward ticket ready. The officer will scan your passport, stamp it, and you're in. The whole process usually takes 10–20 minutes if you have your documents ready.
4
Collect your bags and exit
After clearing immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel. You're now free to start your trip.
