Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — your passport just needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound ticket from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai often ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. Enforcement varies by officer, but it's safer to have one.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you're a first-time visitor. Have your hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. A simple booking printout works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers rarely ask, but carry a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your expenses. No fixed amount is published — just have enough for accommodation, food, and transport.Recommended

Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Japan. If it expires sooner, you'll be refused boarding or entry. Check your passport now — don't wait until the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave home, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return flight and first night accommodation, and download the Visit Japan Web app or register online. Print or screenshot your booking confirmations and any QR codes.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll land at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport, return ticket confirmation, and accommodation address ready.
3
Go through immigration
At the immigration counter, hand over your passport and any pre-filled forms (or show your Visit Japan Web QR code). The officer may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer honestly. They'll stamp your passport with a 'Temporary Visitor' status valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then proceed to customs. If you used Visit Japan Web, scan your QR code at the automated gate. Otherwise, fill out a paper customs declaration form. You'll usually walk through without inspection unless you're carrying restricted items.
5
Activate your eSIM or buy a SIM
If you pre-purchased an eSIM, it activates automatically when you connect to a local network. If not, look for SIM kiosks in the arrivals hall (e.g., at Narita or Haneda). Expect to pay around ¥3,000–¥5,000 for a 7-day data plan.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a work or student visa) before traveling.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You could be fined, detained, or banned from re-entering Japan for up to 5 years. Always leave on time or apply for an extension before your status expires (though extensions are not available for visa-free stays).
If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport during a layover, you'll need to use the visa-free entry (up to 90 days) — just show your onward ticket and passport.
No, the visa-free status is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits only. You cannot work for a Japanese company or perform paid work. Remote work for an overseas employer is a gray area — technically not allowed, but rarely enforced for short stays. For clarity, check with the Japanese embassy.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Japanese immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. Even a small tear or water damage can cause issues — get a new passport if there's any doubt.
No, it's optional. You can fill out paper forms at the airport instead. But using Visit Japan Web speeds up the process significantly — you get a QR code that lets you skip the paper queue. It's free and takes 5 minutes to register.
No, business meetings, conferences, and short-term business activities are covered under the visa-free 90-day stay. You cannot receive a salary from a Japanese company during this time. If you're doing paid work for a Japanese employer, you need a work visa.
