Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Land at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) and head to the visa counter before immigration. Pay the fee in cash — USD is preferred: $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days. Have a passport photo ready; if you don't have one, there's a photo booth near the counter.Check visa infoRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry into Nepal. Airlines at Muscat (MCT) check this before boarding — no exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Kathmandu ask for a confirmed onward ticket before issuing the visa on arrival. A flight booking out of Nepal within your visa validity works — they don't check if it's refundable.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or trekking permit
Have your first night's hotel booking ready — either printed or on your phone. If you're trekking, a TIMS card or ACAP permit serves as proof of your itinerary.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter — no ATMs before immigration
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash. There are no ATMs or card machines before the visa counter. Bring crisp US dollars (no tears, no writing) or other accepted currencies. ATMs are available after you clear immigration.
Visa on arrival is available 24/7 at Kathmandu airport
The visa counter at Tribhuvan International Airport operates around the clock. Even if your flight lands at 2 AM, you can get your visa. No need to worry about office hours.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane or at the airport, grab a 'Visa on Arrival' form. Fill it in with your passport details, flight info, and accommodation. Keep a pen handy.
2
Queue at the visa counter
At Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after baggage claim. There are multiple counters — join the shortest line. Hand over your passport, form, and fee.
3
Pay the fee and get your visa
Pay in cash (USD recommended). The officer will process your visa, take your photo, and hand back your passport with the visa sticker. This takes 5-10 minutes.
4
Proceed to immigration
After getting the visa, walk to the immigration counters. Show your passport with the new visa sticker. The officer stamps you in. Done.

Frequently asked questions

The fee depends on how long you stay: USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days. You can pay in USD, EUR, GBP, or NPR. Cash only — no cards. Bring crisp, undamaged US dollars to avoid issues.
Yes, you can extend your visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (or at immigration offices in Pokhara and other cities). Extensions cost NPR 3,000 for 15 days, NPR 6,000 for 30 days, and so on. You can stay up to 150 days total per calendar year.
If you're staying airside and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you'll need a visa on arrival. The transit area at Kathmandu airport is small — most travellers prefer to get a visa and step out.
Yes, you can get a visa on arrival at major land border crossings like Sunauli (from India), Kakarbhitta (from India), and Kodari (from China). The process is the same as at the airport — fill the form, pay in cash, get your visa. But note that some smaller crossings may not offer this service.
Immigration may ask for proof of onward travel. If you don't have a ticket, you could be denied entry. Best to have a refundable onward ticket or a bus/train ticket out of Nepal. A screenshot on your phone is fine.
Not for the visa itself, but it's strongly recommended. Nepal's healthcare system is basic, and hospital stays can cost hundreds of dollars per day. If you're trekking, many trekking agencies require insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.
You will be denied a visa on arrival. The 6-month validity rule is strictly enforced. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel.
