Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Serbian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Sweden. Sweden does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but your airline might enforce it — check with them before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Swedish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines sometimes check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host in Sweden. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, not having one can delay your entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. There's no fixed amount, but around 450 SEK per day is a safe benchmark. I've never been asked for it, but it's better to have it.Recommended
90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just Sweden. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or other Schengen countries, that counts toward your total. Keep track of your days.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups if possible.
2
Arrive at Swedish border control
At Arlanda, Landvetter, or any Swedish airport, join the queue for non-EU/EEA passports. Present your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your visa-free status and stamp your passport.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day visa-free period. Keep the stamp visible for your departure.
4
Departure from Sweden
When leaving, you may go through passport control again. Your exit stamp will close your stay. Ensure you haven't exceeded 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area.

Frequently asked questions

No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits only. If you plan to work, you need a work permit. Contact the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) for details.
Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen area, not just Sweden. So if you spend 30 days in France, you have 60 days left for Sweden and other Schengen countries combined.
Generally no. Extensions are only granted in exceptional cases (e.g., force majeure, serious medical reasons). You must apply before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can lead to fines or a ban.
For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer (with a permit), you must register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for a personal number.
If you stay in the airport transit area and don't enter Sweden, no visa is needed. But if you need to clear immigration (e.g., to switch terminals), you'll need to meet the same visa-free entry requirements.
Not strictly mandatory at the border, but strongly recommended. Swedish healthcare is expensive for non-residents. Insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical costs is a good idea.
Yes. The 90-day visa-free period applies to the entire Schengen area (27 European countries). You can move freely between them as long as you don't exceed 90 days total in any 180-day period.
