Rwandan passport holders must obtain a visa before traveling to the United States. There is no visa waiver or ESTA eligibility for Rwanda. You need to apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa at the U.S. embassy in Kigali before your trip. This requirement applies for 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
US visa application
B-1/B-2 visitor visa
Rwandan passport holders need a US visa before travel. Start at the US Department of State visa portal — you fill out the DS-160 form online, pay the $185 fee, and book an interview at the US embassy in Kigali. Interview wait times vary from a few weeks to several months, so apply well ahead of your planned travel date.Apply for US visaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs at least one blank page for the visa sticker. US immigration does not require 6 months validity beyond your stay — the passport just needs to be valid for the duration of your trip. Airlines may still enforce the 6-month rule, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
US Customs and Border Protection officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel at the primary inspection booth. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or onward ticket ready. A one-way ticket without a visa or residency status will likely get you denied boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Immigration officers may ask where you are staying, especially on a first visit. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your US host with their address and phone number. A simple booking printout or a screenshot on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Officers can ask how you plan to fund your trip. Carry recent bank statements, a credit card, or enough cash to cover your stay. There is no fixed minimum amount — just show you can pay for your expenses without working illegally.Recommended
Visa required for transit too
Even if you're just changing planes in the US (e.g., flying from Kigali to Canada via JFK), you still need a US visa. There is no transit exemption for Rwandan passport holders.
ESTA not available
Rwanda is not part of the Visa Waiver Program. You cannot use ESTA. A full visa is required for any travel to the US, including tourism, business, or transit.

What happens at the border

1
Complete DS-160 online
Go to ceac.state.gov and fill out the DS-160 form. Upload a recent passport-style photo (2x2 inches, white background). Print the confirmation page with the barcode — you'll need it for the interview.
2
Pay the visa fee
Pay the $185 MRV fee at a designated Ecobank branch in Kigali or via the embassy's online payment portal. Keep the receipt as proof of payment.
3
Schedule your interview
Create an account on the U.S. Visa Information Service for Rwanda (ais.usvisa-info.com). Book the earliest available appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Kigali. Current wait times are typically 2–4 weeks for tourist visas.
4
Attend the interview
Arrive at the embassy (Boulevard de la Révolution, Kigali) 15 minutes early. Bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt, photo, and supporting documents. The officer will ask about your trip purpose, ties to Rwanda, and travel history.
5
Wait for visa processing
If approved, your passport will be held for visa printing. Processing takes 3–5 business days. You'll receive an SMS or email to collect your passport at the DHL center in Kigali.
6
Travel to the US
At the US port of entry (e.g., JFK, LAX, or Dulles), present your passport with visa. The CBP officer may ask about your stay and return plans. Keep your return ticket and accommodation details handy.
