Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Nepal. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Kathmandu airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — they will deny entry if you cannot show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready, either printed or on your phone. Trekking permits also require a hotel booking in Kathmandu.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers occasionally ask for proof of funds — carry at least $200 USD in cash or a credit card statement. ATMs are available in Kathmandu but not in remote trekking areas.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival counter does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD, EUR, or GBP in cash. ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need the visa first.
Photo booth available
If you forget your passport photos, there's a photo booth near the visa counter. It costs about $5 USD and takes a few minutes. But it's cheaper and faster to bring your own.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane or at the airport, grab a 'Visa on Arrival' form. Fill it in with your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep it with your passport and photos.
2
Queue at the visa counter
After you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. There are multiple counters — join the line for your passport type. Have your form, photos, passport, and cash ready.
3
Pay the fee and get your visa
Hand over your documents and pay the fee in cash (USD/EUR/GBP). The officer will issue a sticker visa. Check the validity dates before you walk away.
4
