Thai passport holders need a visa to enter New Zealand. You must apply for a Visitor Visa (or NZeTA if eligible) before you travel. This requirement is in effect for 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA applicationNZeTA: New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority — required for visa-exempt visitors. Apply at immigration.govt.nz or via the NZeTA app ($17 NZD). Takes minutes to approve.
Electronic Travel Authority
Apply for an NZeTA before you fly. The application costs $17 NZD via the app or $23 NZD via the website, and includes the $35 NZD International Visitor Levy. Approval usually takes minutes, but apply at least 72 hours before departure to be safe.Apply for NZeTARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Thai passport must be valid for at least the length of your planned stay in New Zealand. Airlines at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang may still enforce the old 6-month rule — check with your carrier before check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from New Zealand
Immigration officers at Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. A flight booking out of New Zealand or a ticket to a third country works — just have it ready on your phone or printed.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your first night's hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Evidence of sufficient money for your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your expenses — roughly $1,000 NZD per month of stay is a safe benchmark. Immigration may ask if you're arriving without a return ticket or clear plans.Recommended
Visa required — apply early
Thai passport holders cannot enter New Zealand without a pre-approved visa. Processing can take weeks, so start your application at least 6 weeks before your trip. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa.
Travel insurance is a smart move
While not always mandatory, medical costs in New Zealand are high. A simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of dollars. Insurance covers that and more.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Visitor Visa
Submit your application online via Immigration New Zealand's website. You'll need your passport details, travel itinerary, accommodation, and financial documents. Processing takes 2–4 weeks.

Once submitted, you'll receive a confirmation. Check your email and online account for updates. Do not book non-refundable flights until approved.
3
Prepare your documents
Print or save digital copies of your visa approval, passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at New Zealand border
At Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch airports, join the 'Visitors' queue. Present your passport and visa. The officer may ask about your plans, funds, and return ticket. Answer clearly.
