Thai passport holders need an approved ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) before flying to Australia. It's a digital link to your passport number, not a visa sticker. Apply online in 2026, get approved in minutes, and stay up to 3 months per visit.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa (ETA) applicationETA (Australia): Electronic Travel Authority — a digital visa linked to your passport. Required for all eligible passport holders. Apply via the Australian ETA app ($20 AUD fee) before travel.
Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601)
You need an ETA before boarding any flight to Australia. Apply through the official Australian ETA app (not third-party websites) — it costs $20 AUD and approval usually comes within seconds. The ETA is linked electronically to your passport, valid for 12 months, and allows multiple stays of up to 3 months each.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Thai passport must be valid for the whole time you plan to be in Australia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires before you leave, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Australia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight booking ready — if you cannot show one, you risk being refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host in Australia. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. There is no fixed minimum, but around 1,000 AUD per week is a safe benchmark.Recommended
ETA is not a visa sticker
Your ETA is linked electronically to your passport number. You won't get a sticker or paper. When you check in, the airline will verify it in their system. Make sure the name on your ETA matches your passport exactly.
Biosecurity is serious
Australia has strict biosecurity laws. Declare any food, plant material, animal products, or outdoor equipment. If you're unsure, declare it. Fines can be AUD 2,000+ for undeclared items. Sniffer dogs patrol baggage areas.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Download the Australian ETA app (official) or use the Department of Home Affairs website. Fill in your passport details, answer a few questions, and pay the fee (around AUD 20). Most applications are approved within minutes. Do this at least 24 hours before your flight.
2
Check in for your flight
At the airline counter, present your passport. The airline will verify your ETA electronically — no paper needed. They may also ask to see your return ticket. If your ETA isn't approved yet, you won't be allowed to board.
3
Arrive at an Australian airport
You'll go through immigration at airports like Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), or Brisbane (BNE). Use the ePassport gates if eligible (your passport must have a chip). Otherwise, join the queue for a human officer. Have your passport and return ticket ready.
4
Present your documents to border control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, how long you're staying, where you're staying, and when you're leaving. Answer honestly and briefly. They rarely ask for proof of funds for short visits, but have a bank statement or credit card available just in case.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. You'll pass through customs — declare any food, plants, or animal products. Australia has strict biosecurity laws. If you're unsure, declare it. Fines can be steep.

Frequently asked questions

Most applications are approved within minutes. In rare cases it can take up to 12 hours. Apply at least 24 hours before your flight to be safe. The fee is about AUD 20 (around 480 THB).
No. The ETA allows a maximum stay of 3 months per visit. You cannot extend it. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a different visa (like a Visitor Visa subclass 600) before your ETA expires.
It's not routinely asked for short ETA visits, but border officers can request it. Have a bank statement or credit card available. For a 2-week trip, showing you have at least AUD 1,000–2,000 is reasonable.
No. The ETA is for tourism, visiting family, or short business trips (like meetings or conferences). You cannot work for an Australian employer or provide services while on an ETA.
Refusals are rare for genuine tourists, but can happen if you have a criminal record or previous visa issues. You'll receive a refusal notice. You can apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) instead, which has a more thorough assessment. That costs around AUD 150 and takes a few weeks.
Yes. Even if you're only changing planes in an Australian airport, you need a Transit Visa (subclass 771) unless you're from a specific list of countries. Thai passport holders do need a transit visa. Apply separately — it's free but takes a few days.
Yes, if your Thai passport has a chip (most do). SmartGate is available at major airports like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. It's faster than the human queue. Just scan your passport, answer a few questions on the screen, and you're through.
