Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity from the date you enter Kenya. Carry at least two blank visa pages for entry and exit stamps.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at JKIA will ask to see a confirmed onward or return flight. If you are flying out to a third country, have that ticket ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended
Have a hotel booking or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended
Carry cash (USD or EUR) or a credit card statement showing you can cover your stay. There is no fixed minimum, but having $500–$1,000 equivalent on hand avoids questions.Recommended
Apply for your e-Visa early
Processing can take up to 5 business days, and longer during holidays. Don't wait until the last minute — apply at least a week before your flight.
Keep your e-Visa printout handy
Immigration at JKIA may ask to see your e-Visa approval. A digital copy on your phone is usually fine, but a printed copy is safer in case your phone dies or has no signal.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for e-Visa online
Go to the official Kenya e-Visa website (etakenya.go.ke). Fill in your details, upload a passport photo and your passport info page, and pay the fee (around $51 USD for a single-entry tourist visa). Processing usually takes 2–5 business days. Print the approval email and keep it with your passport.
2
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, gather: passport (6+ months validity), printed e-Visa approval, return ticket, first-night hotel booking, and travel insurance if you have it. Screenshots on your phone are fine for most, but a printed copy of the e-Visa is safest.
3
Arrive at JKIA (Nairobi) or Moi International (Mombasa)
At immigration, join the 'Visitors' queue. Hand over your passport, e-Visa printout, and return ticket. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where you're staying). Answer clearly. You'll get an entry stamp — check the date is correct before walking away.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Outside, you'll find taxi booths and SIM card vendors. If you pre-ordered an eSIM, it activates automatically.
