Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a Japanese eVisa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal. Processing takes 3–5 business days. Print the visa issuance notice and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover your stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines may still enforce 6 months, so check with your carrier before flying.Required

Proof of departure
Immigration officers may ask for a return or onward ticket. Enforcement varies by officer, but having one avoids delays. A flight reservation or refundable ticket works.Recommended

Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask, but it speeds things up if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a bank statement or enough cash to cover your stay. No fixed amount is published, but ¥100,000 per week is a safe benchmark.Recommended

What happens at the border

1

Print or save your eVisa approval, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Also register on Visit Japan Web if you want to skip queues.
3
Arrive at a Japanese airport
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or other major airports, proceed to the foreign passport queue. Have your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket ready. The officer will scan your passport and take a photo.

After passport control, collect your luggage and go through customs. If you registered on Visit Japan Web, use the QR code at the automated gate. Otherwise, fill out a paper declaration form.
