Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at land border crossings. Pay in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR) — 15 days costs $30, 30 days costs $50, 90 days costs $125. Have two passport photos ready.Check visa feesRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from the day you land in Nepal. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied at the gate.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Kathmandu airport ask for a flight out of Nepal before they issue the visa. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready — they check this at the visa counter.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to have on hand
Immigration rarely asks for hotel bookings, but having a printed reservation for your first few nights helps if questioned. Trekking permits require a hotel address anyway.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to have on hand
Officers don't routinely ask for bank statements, but carrying $50–$100 per day in cash or a card with a visible balance avoids problems. ATMs work in Kathmandu and Pokhara.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival counter does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD, EUR, or NPR in cash. ATMs are available after you clear immigration, but not before.
Photo booth available
If you forget a passport photo, there's a photo booth near the visa counter at Tribhuvan Airport. It costs about $5 USD and takes 2 minutes. Not a big deal, but saves hassle.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival form
On the plane or at the airport, grab a 'Tourist Visa on Arrival' form. Fill in your details: passport info, flight number, hotel address. Keep it simple.
2
Queue at the visa counter
At Tribhuvan International Airport, head to the 'Visa on Arrival' counters after baggage claim. There are separate lines for different visa durations (15, 30, 90 days). Hand over your form, passport, and fee.
3
Pay the fee and get your visa
Pay in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR). The officer will stick the visa in your passport and stamp it. Double-check the dates before walking away.
4
Proceed to immigration
After getting the visa, go to the immigration counters. Show your passport with the new visa. They'll scan it and let you through. That's it.

Frequently asked questions

As of 2026, the fees are: 15 days — $30 USD, 30 days — $50 USD, 90 days — $125 USD. Pay in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR). No cards.
Yes, you can extend at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (or Pokhara office). Extensions cost about $3 USD per day for up to 15 days, then $5 per day for additional days. Maximum total stay is 150 days per calendar year.
If you're staying airside and not leaving the transit area, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to leave the airport (even for a few hours), you need a visa on arrival.
Same process — visa on arrival is available at all major land border crossings (e.g., Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, Belahiya). The same fees and validity periods apply. Just fill the form and pay cash.
Nepal does offer an e-visa for some nationalities, but Finns can just use the visa on arrival. The e-visa is not faster or cheaper — it's the same process online. Stick with visa on arrival.
Overstays are fined $5 USD per day for the first 30 days, then $2 per day after that. You pay at immigration when you leave. Serious overstays (months) can lead to a ban. Don't risk it.
No mandatory vaccines for entry. But hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are recommended. If you're trekking above 2,500m, altitude sickness meds are a good idea. Check with your doctor 4-6 weeks before travel.
