What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. You'll see a row of self-service kiosks. Use one to fill in your details, scan your passport, and print a receipt. Keep that receipt.
2
Pay the visa fee
Take the receipt to the cashier counter. Pay in USD, EUR, or NPR. No credit cards. The fee for 15 days is about $30, for 30 days about $50. Get a payment receipt.
3
Queue at immigration
Hand over your passport, the payment receipt, and the kiosk receipt. The officer will take your photo and fingerprints, then stamp the visa in your passport. This takes 2–5 minutes.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Nepal.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend your visa at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (or Pokhara office). Extensions cost about $3 per day for up to 15 days, then $5 per day for the next 15 days. Maximum total stay is 150 days per calendar year.
The same visa on arrival process applies at major land borders like Kakarbhitta (India side) and Kodari (Tibet side). You'll fill a form, pay the fee in cash (USD/EUR/NPR), and get the visa. Some smaller crossings may not offer visa on arrival — check ahead.
If you're transiting and not leaving the airport, you don't need a visa. But if you plan to exit the transit area for any reason, you must get a visa on arrival.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Nepali immigration. No exceptions. Renew your passport before traveling.
No. Only cash in USD, EUR, or NPR. ATMs are available after immigration, but it's safer to bring cash. Some kiosks accept cards for the kiosk fee, but the visa fee itself is cash-only.
Usually 15–30 minutes total, depending on the queue. During peak hours (evening arrivals), it can take up to an hour. The kiosks are fast, but the cashier line can be slow.
Not for the visa on arrival, but it's strongly recommended. Hospital stays in Nepal can cost hundreds of dollars per day, and if you plan to trek, many trekking agencies require proof of insurance covering helicopter evacuation.
