Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply online at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at least 3 working days before departure. The fee is $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Print the approval letter and bring it with your passport to immigration.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond departure
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your departure date from Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Immigration may ask to see you have at least $500 USD or equivalent in cash, traveler's cheques, or a recent bank statement. ATMs are widely available in cities but not at border crossings.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you land in Vietnam, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.
Print your eVisa
Some airlines and immigration officers still ask for a physical printout of your eVisa. Always carry a paper copy in addition to a digital backup on your phone.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnam eVisa website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page. Pay the fee (around $25 USD for single entry, $50 for multiple entry). Processing takes 3-5 working days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get an email with your eVisa. Print a paper copy — some airlines and immigration officers still ask to see a physical printout. Save a digital copy on your phone as backup.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, gather: passport (valid 6+ months), printed eVisa, return/onward ticket confirmation, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance docs. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a Vietnamese airport
At immigration, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport and printed eVisa. The officer may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking — have them ready. They'll stamp your passport with an entry stamp valid for up to 90 days.
