Dutch passport holders need a visa to enter New Zealand in 2026. You must apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before you travel — it's not a visa but a mandatory pre-travel authorisation. Plan ahead as processing can take a few days.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority)You need this digital travel authorization before you fly; without it you won't be allowed to board.
Visa waiver entry permission
Dutch passport holders must obtain an NZeTA before boarding a flight to New Zealand. Apply online or via the mobile app; approval is usually granted within 72 hours. The NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years.Required
Passport validityYour passport must not expire too soon after your trip; check the expiry date well in advance.
Valid for at least 6 months beyond departure
Your Dutch passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from New Zealand. Ensure it meets this before traveling.Required
Blank passport pagesMake sure there's an empty page in your passport for the immigration officer to stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps. This is a standard requirement for border control.Required
Return or onward ticketIt's wise to have a booked flight out of New Zealand to avoid any questions at the border.
Proof of departure
Although not always requested, you should carry proof of a return or onward ticket to show you will leave New Zealand before your permitted stay ends. Immigration may ask for it.Recommended
Proof of sufficient fundsCarry bank statements or a credit card to prove you can pay for your trip if asked.
Financial evidence
You may be asked to show you have enough money to support yourself during your stay. There is no fixed amount, but you should have access to funds covering accommodation, food, and activities.Recommended
Arrival declarationFill this out online just before you fly; it's a mandatory step for all travelers entering New Zealand.
New Zealand Traveller Declaration
You must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration before arriving. This is done online within 24 hours before departure. It replaces paper arrival cards.Required
Biosecurity is strict — declare everything
New Zealand has very strict biosecurity laws. If you bring in food, plants, animal products, or outdoor gear (hiking boots, tents), you must declare them on your arrival card. Failure to declare can result in a fine of NZD 400 or more. When in doubt, declare it.
eGates speed up arrival
If your Dutch passport has the biometric chip symbol, you can use the eGates at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown airports. This usually takes under a minute. Just scan your passport and look at the camera — no officer needed.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for NZeTA online
Go to the official Immigration New Zealand website or download the NZeTA app. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel plans. Pay the fee (NZD 9–12) and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL, NZD 35). You'll receive an email confirmation — save it.
2
Check your passport validity
Make sure your passport has at least 6 months of validity left from your arrival date. If it doesn't, renew it before applying for the NZeTA — the NZeTA is linked to your passport number.
3
Book your flights and accommodation
Book a return or onward ticket. Also book your first night's accommodation. Keep confirmations on your phone or printed out.
4
Arrive at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Queenstown airport
Most Dutch travellers fly into Auckland Airport (AKL). At immigration, join the 'eGate' queue if your passport has the chip symbol — it's faster. Otherwise, join the standard queue. Have your passport, NZeTA confirmation, and return ticket ready. The officer may ask about your plans and funds.
5
Collect your luggage and clear customs
New Zealand has strict biosecurity. Declare any food, outdoor gear, or animal products. If you're unsure, declare it — fines are steep. After customs, you're free to enter.

Frequently asked questions

No, but you need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority). It's not a visa — it's a pre-travel authorisation. Apply online at least a week before you go. The cost is about NZD 44 total (NZeTA fee + tourist levy). It's valid for up to 2 years for multiple visits.
You can stay up to 3 months per visit. The NZeTA itself is valid for 2 years, so you can come and go multiple times within that period, as long as each stay is 3 months or less.
No, the NZeTA does not allow extensions. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa (like a visitor visa) before your NZeTA expires. Overstaying can lead to deportation and future entry bans.
Your NZeTA is linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport, you'll need to apply for a new NZeTA with the new passport details. The old one becomes invalid.
If you're transiting through an airport and not leaving the international transit area, you don't need an NZeTA. But if you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you need the NZeTA. Check with your airline if you're unsure.
No. The NZeTA is for tourism, visiting family, or short business trips (like meetings). You cannot work or study. If you want to work or study, you need a specific visa (e.g., working holiday visa, student visa).
Denials are rare for Dutch passport holders, but if it happens, you'll receive a reason. You can reapply with corrected information or contact Immigration New Zealand. If you're in a hurry, consider applying for a visitor visa instead — it takes longer but has a higher chance of approval if your NZeTA was denied.
