Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The fee is $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days — do not book flights until you receive the approval letter.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return flight out of Vietnam. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they will check the date matches your eVisa validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host in Vietnam. Immigration may ask for it at the border, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support your stay
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500 USD available. Officers rarely ask, but if you look underprepared they may request proof of sufficient funds for your trip.Recommended
Apply early — don't wait until the last minute
eVisa processing can take up to 5 working days, and the system sometimes has delays. Apply at least 2 weeks before your flight to avoid stress.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Immigration will deny boarding or entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your arrival date. Check your passport now, not the night before your flight.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnam eVisa website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scanned copy of your passport data page, and pay the fee. Processing takes 3-5 working days. You'll receive a PDF approval letter by email.
2
Print your eVisa approval letter
Once approved, print the eVisa letter. You'll need to present it at immigration when you arrive. Keep a digital copy on your phone as backup.
3
Prepare your arrival documents
Before you land, have your passport, printed eVisa, return ticket, and first night accommodation confirmation ready. Put them in an easily accessible pocket — you'll need them at the immigration counter.
4
Arrive at a Vietnamese airport and go through immigration
At the airport (e.g., Noi Bai in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City), follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'. Join the queue for 'Foreign Passports'. Hand over your passport, eVisa, and any requested documents. The officer will stamp you in. The process usually takes 2-5 minutes per person.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're now officially in Vietnam.
