Taiwan passport holders can travel to New Zealand without a traditional visa, but you'll need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you fly. It's a quick online application, and once approved, it's valid for up to 2 years. Here's what you need to know to get through immigration smoothly.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
New Zealand eVisitor visa (NZeTA)You need this online authorization before you fly to New Zealand.
Apply online before travel
Taiwan passport holders must obtain an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before boarding. Apply through the official NZeTA website or mobile app; approval is typically granted within 72 hours. The NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years for multiple visits.Required
Passport validityYour passport must be valid well past your trip to avoid being denied entry.
At least 6 months beyond departure
Your Taiwan passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from New Zealand. Ensure your passport does not expire before 2026-08-06 if you plan to stay the maximum allowed period.Required
Blank passport pagesYou need an empty page in your passport for the border officer to stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page (not counting the endorsement page) for the entry stamp. It is recommended to have 2 blank pages to accommodate any additional stamps.Required
Return or onward ticketShow you plan to leave New Zealand before your visa-free stay ends.
Proof of departure
You must hold a confirmed return or onward ticket to a country you are eligible to enter, with a departure date within your permitted stay (up to 90 days). This is checked at check-in and may be requested by immigration.Required
Proof of sufficient fundsIt's wise to have evidence you can support yourself during your visit.
Financial evidence
You should be able to demonstrate access to at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay, or NZD 400 per month if accommodation is prepaid. Carry bank statements, credit cards, or cash to show if asked.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to pre-submit a declaration, but be prepared to answer questions on arrival.
New Zealand Traveller Declaration
No separate arrival declaration is required for Taiwan passport holders. However, you may still be asked to complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration on arrival (electronic or paper). Be ready to declare any food, plants, or biosecurity items. Not required
Visa extensionYou cannot extend your stay; plan your trip within the allowed time.
Not permitted
The NZeTA does not allow extension of stay. You must leave New Zealand before your 90-day visa-free period ends. Overstaying can lead to penalties and future entry bans. Not required
Apply early — don't risk it
Even though NZeTA approval is usually fast, it's not guaranteed. If you apply too close to departure and there's a hiccup, you'll miss your flight. Apply at least a week before you travel to be safe.
Biosecurity is no joke
New Zealand has some of the strictest biosecurity rules in the world. Fines for undeclared food, plants, or animal products start at NZD $400 and can go much higher. When in doubt, declare it — or leave it at home.
Your NZeTA is linked to your passport
If you renew your passport after getting an NZeTA, the NZeTA is no longer valid. You'll need to apply for a new one with your new passport details.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your NZeTA
Go to the official NZeTA website or download the app. Fill in your passport details, personal info, and travel plans. Pay the NZD $17 (online) or NZD $23 (app) plus the NZD $35 IVL. Approval usually comes within minutes to a few days, but apply at least 72 hours before departure.
2
Check in for your flight
At the airline counter, show your Taiwan passport. The airline will verify your NZeTA electronically — if it's not approved, you won't get a boarding pass. Make sure your passport has at least 6 months validity and a blank page.
3
Arrive in New Zealand
You'll land at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Queenstown. Follow the 'Arrivals' signs. You'll go through passport control — have your passport ready. The officer may ask about your trip duration and accommodation. They'll stamp your passport with a visitor visa valid for up to 3 months.
4
Clear customs and biosecurity
After passport control, collect your bags and go through customs. New Zealand has strict biosecurity — declare any food, plant, or animal products. If you're unsure, declare it. Fines for undeclared items are steep.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay for up to 3 months per visit. The NZeTA itself is valid for 2 years, so you can make multiple trips within that period, as long as each stay doesn't exceed 3 months.
The NZeTA fee is NZD $17 if you apply online, or NZD $23 via the mobile app. Plus, there's a mandatory International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $35. So total is NZD $52 (online) or NZD $58 (app).
Most applications are approved within minutes to a few hours. But it can take up to 72 hours, so apply well in advance. If you apply less than 72 hours before your flight, you risk being denied boarding.
No. The NZeTA is for tourism, visiting family, or short business trips. You cannot work or study for more than 3 months. For work, you'd need a proper work visa.
Overstaying is a serious offense. You could be fined, detained, and deported, and it may affect future visa applications to New Zealand and other countries. If you need more time, apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires.
No, but you'll need to show your NZeTA when flying there. These are self-governing in free association with New Zealand, and entry is generally allowed with the same conditions as New Zealand.
No, it's an electronic travel authority, not a visa. It's simpler and faster to get. But it's still a mandatory entry requirement — you can't board a flight without it.
